Hollywood's Digital Dawdling - BusinessWeek

Hollywood's Digital Dawdling - BusinessWeek

A great BusinessWeek article points out how annoying it is that Hollywood still has a lot of work to do to get itself into the 21st century. It's 2009, and studios can still act like it's 1999 or something. It's not that hard to make a film available these days. Read the article.

Logic Studio - Apple Store (U.S.)

I was on Apple's website, taking a look at the price of the latest Logic Studio because I've been experimenting with music lately. Someone had written a review I found amusing, and for some reason it came to my attention that I hadn't posted anything on my blog an a long time. This is a pretty funny review because it's true in many ways.

This is tooooo easy; now all those 5 year olds and "musicians" who became DJs a few years ago have all the skills necessary to bec…Read moreome "producers" of music good enough to make your girlfriend dump you. Apple is the new Idol, and here we present the shrink-wrapped souls of thousands, awaiting your command. If you deem yourself an innovator, you'd better think beyond the world of the senses, because this box makes "musical" innovation insignificant. Just as the federal reserve devalues our currency by putting more of it into circulation, apple has now decreased the value of music tenfold. The "musician" as recordist is now dead. Brave souls will resist this monster of manipulation and follow the only humanizing creed left for true musicians: Live Music Only, on instruments not requiring power consumption/electricity/oil/war/pollution. The weak, among whom I count myself, will spend their time alone in front of a computer screen, standing on the shoulders of giants, listening in awe to "what we've created," wasting resources getting our "creations" to the level of "broadcast quality" so we can become a bigger cog in the machine. After 4 hours with this upgrade, without even looking at the books, my productivity has at least tripled. Screensets are OPTIMIZED, cubase/nuendo zooming has been incorporated, playlist comping from protools is new and IMPROVED, everything your intuition always got frustrated by is now fixed, and music moves almost as fast as thought. the only thing i haven't found yet is the capture last take as recording key command. I'm hoping they just changed the name. I'm also hoping its easy to make your own templates, or modify apple's cause the sampled brass still sounds like doodoo. For the price of the upgrade, if you're using logic 6 or 7, you'd be a fool not to buy this. You will OBEY APPLE.

It had been a while since I picked up my guitar, and it was ages ago the last time I touched a piano. Mostly, that's because I always get ahead of the tempo, or I lag behind it, I don't know many chords off the top of my head and I can't always bend my fingers in all those funny ways. I enjoy creating digital music because it's more like drawing... or maybe I think of it kind of like writing or composing music, as opposed to playing it, but with the ability to hear it while writing. I'm not often that wonderful at anything on the spot, let alone making something pleasant-sounding come out of an instrument. Using software, I'm able to make a lot more modifications a lot more easily and tweak things, perfecting my music as I go. By no means does this make me as talented a musician as someone who can actually play a real instrument with their own hands and make it sound good. I make music for a different reason, however, which is for my films.

An Anthropological Introduction to YouTube

This is probably the most important concept presented before the Library of Congress in contemporary history. We're going to have to rethink a lot of things.

About Self-Contradiction

I live my life in the most confusing way possible. That's the only way that makes sense.

Self-contradiction is unavoidable. Everybody's a hypocrite. Nobody really cares if someone's a hypocrite (or maybe they do but for the sake of explaining this idea, I will assume nobody really gives a shit about hypocrisy) but when someone contradicts their self, people get all pissed off. It's because hypocrisy most often occurs during debate, or when someone feels they have been put on the spot, regardless of whether they really have been put on the spot or not. Then, since everybody is always getting all fussed up about who said what and whether it makes sense according to what they said previously, their opponent will seize that as an opportunity to explain how the hypocrite they're debating against is stunting some kind of progress by making illogical assertions.
